PM Orb¡n: Ukraine Would Not Survive a Day Without Western Support

Budapest: Prime Minister Viktor Orb¡n stated in a public radio interview on Friday that Ukraine would be unable to sustain itself, let alone engage in a war with Russia, without the assistance from Western countries.

According to About Hungary, PM Orb¡n emphasized that the West is crucial for the survival of Ukraine, pointing out that Western support is what keeps Ukraine’s state mechanisms functional. He elaborated that Western nations are currently shouldering the financial burden of Ukrainian pensions, state employees’ salaries, and public services, as well as funding the Ukrainian military.

PM Orb¡n stressed that Ukraine’s potential admission into the European Union would bring significant challenges. He warned that such an inclusion would mean accepting a member state embroiled in conflict, which could eventually draw all EU members into the war. “We don’t want the Russia-Ukraine war to become our war,” he reiterated.

He further criticized the stance of Western European leaders, who, three years ago, perceived the conflict as their own, believing that Ukraine was fighting for Europe’s security against a Russian threat. PM Orb¡n argued that this viewpoint wrongly transformed Ukraine into a security issue for Europe.

Contrasting the approach of other EU countries, the Hungarian government has consistently positioned itself as a proponent of peace. PM Orb¡n noted that they view the war as a conflict between “two Slavic brothers” and have been advocating for a ceasefire to prevent further economic repercussions for Europe.
