PM Orb¡n Asserts Hungarian Mandate Against EU Financial Burdens

Brussels: ‘I did not arrive empty-handed,’ PM Orb¡n declared at a symbolic location in Brussels, emphasizing that he brought the mandate of 1.6 million Hungarian citizens through a national consultation. The consultation is hailed as one of the most successful public participation exercises in recent years, noted for its high turnout and the clarity of its results.

According to About Hungary, the consultation results convey an unequivocal message from Hungarian voters. They strongly oppose any increase in financial burdens due to the war and reject left-wing austerity measures from Brussels. PM Orb¡n argued that these proposals would force Hungarian families and businesses to finance the war in Ukraine through increased taxes and reduced support.

The results show overwhelming public opposition, with 98 percent of respondents rejecting a multi-rate tax system and 97 percent opposing the narrowing of family tax allowances. A decisive 96 percent opposed abolishing tax exemptions for mothers and young people. Support for maintaining utility cost reductions was nearly unanimous at 99 percent, and 98 percent rejected any increase in corporate taxes.

‘These figures speak for themselves,’ PM Orb¡n stated, highlighting that Hungarian voters have set a firm line against policies that could weaken families, raise living costs, or undermine economic competitiveness. He emphasized that the consultation affirms Hungarians’ desire for stability, predictability, and protection of economic achievements amidst external pressure.

PM Orb¡n underscored that the national consultation is a tool of democratic self-defense, with the participation of nearly two million citizens on strategic economic and social questions providing a strong political and moral mandate. This, he said, significantly strengthens Hungary’s position in European debates.

The prime minister stressed that enforcing the will of the Hungarian people is a simple but crucial task, applicable both in Budapest and Brussels, where decisions with long-term consequences for national economies and future generations are being prepared.

By arriving in Brussels backed by the clearly articulated will of Hungarian citizens, the government is better equipped to resist policies conflicting with national interests and to represent Hungary’s position with clarity and confidence at the European level.
