PM Orbán Criticizes EU over Approach to Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Budapest: Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, speaking at the commemoration of the 68th anniversary of Hungary’s anti-Soviet uprising in 1956, criticized Brussels for its handling of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, asserting that European leaders have entangled the West in a “hopeless war”. Orbán emphasized the importance of defending Hungary’s interests, drawing parallels between past struggles for Hungarian freedom and current geopolitical tensions.

According to About Hungary, Orbán addressed the growing pressure from Brussels on Hungary and its government during the event at Millenaris Park in Budapest. He questioned whether Hungary should engage in the conflict against Russia, highlighting that some political opponents argue the lesson of 1956 is to support Ukraine’s fight. He expressed concern that the world is closer to a world war than at any time in the past 70 years, suggesting that many fail to recognize the precariousness of the situation.

Orbán accused European leaders, whom he referred to as “Brussel
s bureaucrats”, of leading the West into an unwinnable conflict, motivated by an unrealistic hope of victory. He portrayed their actions as a misguided attempt to frame the war as a Western battle against Russia, aimed at defeating and economically crippling the adversary. He further warned of efforts to involve the entire European Union in the conflict, referencing a so-called “new victory plan” that he said would escalate the war.
