Piazza Fontana Bombing a Permanent Lesson for Italy, Says Mattarella

MILAN: President Sergio Mattarella addressed the nation on the 55th anniversary of the Piazza Fontana bombing, emphasizing how the tragic event united Italians in defense of democracy and constitutional values. The attack on December 12, 1969, claimed 17 lives and injured 88, marking the beginning of Italy’s ‘Years of Lead,’ a period of political violence and unrest.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella described the bombing in Milan as a “terrible trial” that sought to destabilize democracy and push the country towards authoritarianism. He highlighted that the day’s events, which included additional bombings in Rome and the discovery of another explosive in Milan, were intended to create chaos and violence in Italian society.

Mattarella stressed that the unity demonstrated by Italians in the aftermath of the attack was crucial in overcoming the crisis. He noted that the nation came together to defend constitutional values, enabling a return to civil and social progress. He described Milan as a symbo
