Papabili: Pizzaballa, Franciscan of Holy Land Dialogue

Vatican City: Italian Pierbattista Pizzaballa, a prominent figure and potential candidate for the papacy, is among the most distinguished members of the College of Cardinals. His strong ties to the Holy Land, where he has resided for many years, first as a Franciscan of the Custody and later as the Patriarch of the Latins, have made him a well-known personality in ecclesiastical circles.

According to Ansa News Agency, Pizzaballa was elevated to the rank of cardinal during the Consistory on September 30, 2023. However, his elevation coincided with a tumultuous period as, just a week later, the Holy Land was engulfed in a severe and ongoing conflict. Despite the turmoil, Pizzaballa has remained committed to his duties, making efforts to be present in Gaza when circumstances allow.

At sixty years old, having celebrated his birthday on April 21, Pizzaballa is one of the younger cardinals in the conclave. His journey in the Church began early; he entered the seminary at the tender age of nine and joined the order of the Friars Minor of Ferrara at twenty. By 1990, he was dispatched to the Holy Land, where his linguistic skills and ability to engage in dialogue with both Israelis and Palestinians led to his twelve-year tenure as Custodian of the friars, serving three consecutive terms.

In 2016, after returning to Italy, Pope Francis appointed him as the apostolic administrator sede vacante of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, eventually becoming the Patriarch himself. One of his significant challenges was addressing the substantial debt accumulated by his predecessors in the construction of the University of Madaba. Through difficult but necessary decisions, Pizzaballa successfully executed the financial stabilization mission assigned by Pope Francis.

His recent years have been characterized by relentless efforts to facilitate dialogue between the Israeli and Palestinian communities. This work is critical for the small Catholic community affected by the conflict, which has also devastated the local economy reliant on religious tourism-a vital source of income for families associated with the Patriarchate under Pizzaballa’s leadership.
