Palestinian Suffering May Not Be Flotilla’s Priority, Says Meloni
Copenhagen: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday criticised the Global Sumud Flotilla after it rejected her appeal for it to halt its bid to take aid to Gaza via sea in the wake of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan. “It is a moment in which everyone should understand that exercising responsibility, waiting while the peace negotiations take place, is perhaps the most useful thing that can be done to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinians,” Meloni said on the sidelines of the European summit.
According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni expressed concerns that the suffering of the Palestinian people may not be the primary focus of the Global Sumud Flotilla. This statement came after the flotilla dismissed her request to pause its mission, which aims to deliver aid to Gaza. Meloni emphasized the importance of exercising restraint and responsibility during ongoing peace negotiations, suggesting that such actions could be more beneficial in addressing Palestinian suffering.
Meloni’s remarks highlight the tension between humanitarian initiatives and diplomatic efforts in the region. The Global Sumud Flotilla’s decision to proceed with its mission despite appeals for a halt indicates differing perspectives on how to best support the Palestinian people amid international peace discussions.
