Over 200 speakers at 5th Cyprus Forum on 3-4 October

The 5th Cyprus Forum will include over 200 speakers and 64 hours of discussions in four parallel stages on October 3-4 in Nicosia, the conference organisers said during a press conference held on Friday in Nicosia.

As stated, the conference will be held at the Old Nicosia Town Hall and Ledra Palace and is organised by Oxygen for Democracy in collaboration with the Delphi Economic Forum and the University of Cyprus.

They added that the Cyprus Forum is held under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic, noting that the President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, as well as the President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou, will attend the opening ceremony of the conference, which will take place on October 3 at 10:00 am at the Old Town Hall of Nicosia.

In her remarks, Oxygen for Democracy Board Chairwoman Georgia Athanasiou said that the themes of this year’s Cyprus Forum are based on nine pillars concerning Democracy and the Rule of Law, Foreign Policy, Economy, Social Issues, Peac
e Preservation, Sustainability and Technology and Innovation, while for his part, Cyprus Forum Founder and Executive Chairman Nicolas Kyriakides explained that the themes chosen are related to the goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and in particular to Goal 16, which concerns Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

In turn, Oxygen for Democracy’s Policy Officer George Isaia noted that the debates will focus on the powers of the Attorney General, the Anti-Corruption Authority, as well as how modern democracies evolve through technology, while his colleague Berk Tansel highlighted as a novelty of this year’s Forum the presentation of the Oxygen for Democracy Award to eight personalities from both communities who have contributed to strengthening democracy, reconciliation and peace in Cyprus.

According to the organizers, more than 200 speakers will contribute to the discussions of the 5th Cyprus Forum, including political officials, technocrats, academics, representatives of or
ganisations, research centres and civil society, while this year an increased participation of Turkish Cypriot speakers is expected, as well as personalities from Greece and Turkey, who will join the discussions on peace issues and Greek Cypriot-Turkish relations, with over 70 foreign speakers contributing to discussions aiming at proposing workable solutions to the country’s key political issues.
