Oca Claims Victory in Siena Palio

Siena: The Oca (Goose) contrada emerged victorious in the Siena Palio, a renowned medieval bareback horse race, held on Thursday night. Veteran jockey Giovanni Atzeni, known as Tittia, rode the bay gelding Diodoro to a triumphant finish, leading the race from start to end. The event, characterized by a 90-minute rush around the central Piazza del Campo, was attended by enthusiastic locals and tourists alike.

According to Ansa News Agency, this victory marks Tittia’s 11th win in the Palio, bringing him closer to the record of 14 wins held by Andrea de Gortes, also known as Aceto. The race was originally scheduled for July 2 but was postponed due to a rainstorm that rendered the track unsuitable for racing.

The Siena Palio is steeped in history, originating in the 13th century. It is a significant tourist attraction in Italy, though it often surprises newcomers with its intensity and the rivalries it ignites among the city’s neighborhoods, or ‘contrade’. The race includes jockeys from ten of Siena’s 17 contra
de, competing fiercely for the coveted silk prize.

The race is notorious for its lack of stringent rules, allowing tactics such as whipping a rival’s horse or dismounting a jockey. Victory is awarded to the horse that completes three laps, even without a jockey. This year’s event avoided major incidents despite pre-race tensions and multiple false starts.

Despite its popularity, the Palio has drawn criticism from animal rights advocates who argue it is dangerous and inhumane. Since 1970, over 50 horses have reportedly died as a result of the race, fueling ongoing debates about its future.
