Number of Working Over-50s in Italy Doubles Over Two Decades

Rome: Italy’s workforce is ageing faster and faster, according to Istat data released on Saturday. The national statistics agency reported that nearly 10 million over-50s, specifically 9,992,000 individuals, were employed in January 2025, marking an increase of over five million compared to the same month in 2005.

According to Ansa News Agency, the employment landscape for younger workers has shifted in the opposite direction. The number of under-35s in employment fell significantly, from 7.47 million to 5.44 million over the same 20-year period.

Istat also highlighted that the overall number of people employed in Italy increased by 1.86 million between January 2005 and January 2025. This trend underscores the growing presence of older workers in the Italian labor market, as well as a notable decline in younger workforce participation.
