Nordio and Piantedosi to Address Parliament on Controversial Almasri Case

Rome: Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Justice Minister Carlo Nordio are scheduled to report to Parliament regarding the case involving Libyan commander Najeem Osema Almasri Habish. This announcement was made via a note issued by the press office of the Minister for Relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani. The ministers will address the Lower House at 16:15 on Wednesday, followed by a session in the Senate two hours later, as confirmed by government members and the speakers of both legislative bodies.

According to Ansa News Agency, Libyan police chief Almasri, who directed Tripoli’s Mitiga detention centre, is wanted on war crimes charges by the International Criminal Court (ICC). He was released and returned to Libya last Tuesday due to a technical issue with his case. The Rome court of appeal ordered his release, citing a procedural problem linked to the involvement, or lack thereof, of Justice Minister Carlo Nordio.

Almasri’s departure from Italy was executed on a State flight, and he was greeted by supporters upon landing in Tripoli. In a statement to the Senate on Thursday, Minister Piantedosi emphasized that Almasri was expelled because he posed a danger. The ICC has requested an explanation from Italy, which maintains an agreement with Libya for coast guard aid in return for collaboration in preventing illegal migration crossings, regarding Almasri’s release.
