NIAF Applauds Trump’s Decision to Reinstate Columbus Day
Washington: The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) has expressed strong support for US President Donald Trump’s recent announcement to reinstate Columbus Day, a holiday that had been replaced by Indigenous People’s Day in certain regions of the United States. The foundation sees this move as a reaffirmation of the holiday’s significance.
According to Ansa News Agency, President Trump announced on Truth Social that he intends to “bring back” Columbus Day, asserting that it has remained a federal holiday since 1971. Trump criticized efforts to diminish the holiday’s prominence, stating that Columbus Day was unjustly overshadowed, and emphasized its importance to the Italian American community. His announcement has been met with approval from NIAF, which views the holiday as an integral symbol of Italian American heritage and contributions.
Christopher Columbus, historically credited with discovering America, has become a controversial figure due to allegations of his role in the enslavement and genocide of Native Americans. Consequently, several states and cities, including the District of Columbia, Colorado, Hawaii, and Los Angeles County, have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day or similar holidays. This shift began in 1992 with Berkeley, California, and has since been adopted by cities like Austin, Boise, Cincinnati, and San Francisco, among others.
NIAF President and CEO Robert Allegrini highlighted the foundation’s longstanding efforts to preserve the meaning of Columbus Day. He stated that the organization has actively defended Columbus statues and monuments, viewing them as crucial symbols of cultural heritage. Allegrini expressed gratitude for President Trump’s support and conveyed NIAF’s commitment to collaborating with the administration to ensure Columbus Day continues to honor the spirit of exploration and cultural exchange that Columbus represents. The foundation anticipates a revitalized national celebration that acknowledges the historical connection between Italy and the United States.
