New Manifesto for the Future of Architecture in Madrid Presented by Spanish President and Curator Carlo Ratti

Madrid: “Intelligens: Towards a New Architecture of Adaptation” is the new Manifesto for the Future of Architecture, presented in Madrid by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro S¡nchez, and the curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale, Carlo Ratti, in the presence of the Italian Ambassador to Madrid, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi.

According to Ansa News Agency, Southern Europe, including Spain, has been severely affected by climate change, experiencing rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and catastrophic flooding. A recent example of these challenges is the dramatic floods that hit Valencia in October 2024. Within this challenging context, the manifesto emphasizes that architecture must play a more urgent and proactive role. This involves not only contributing to emission reduction but also emphasizing adaptation, which is the ability of the built environment to resist and respond to climate change impacts. The theme is central to the Architecture Biennale 2025, scheduled from May 10 to November 23, serving as a call to action.

At the heart of this initiative is Carlo Ratti’s dialogue with representatives from 66 National Participations worldwide, who were invited to respond to the proposal ‘One Place, One Solution’ and present concrete architectural ideas for climate change adaptation. Ratti stressed that architecture now concerns survival and adaptation, drawing on every form of intelligence available, including natural, artificial, and collective. The International Architecture Exhibition will explore these themes with over 750 participants from various fields, including architecture, engineering, mathematics, climatology, philosophy, arts, culinary arts, programming, writing, wood carving, farming, and fashion design.

Following President S¡nchez’s endorsement, the Manifesto has entered a phase of open circulation. Numerous participants of the Architecture Biennale 2025 have already joined the appeal, which is now extended to architects, researchers, students, and citizens worldwide.
