Migrants and Refugees to Attend Pope Francis’ Funeral Alongside World Leaders

Rome: Migrants and refugees will join world leaders at Pope Francis’ funeral at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Saturday, as announced by the migrant rescue NGO Mediterranea on Thursday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the charity, which had several meetings with the late pontiff, has now confirmed their participation through the Prefecture of the Papal Household. The delegation will include rescuers and migrants, as well as refugees who have endured torture and escaped from Libyan concentration camps.

The Pope’s body, currently lying in state at St Peter’s where over 50,000 mourners have already paid their respects, will be moved for a simple and private burial on the same day at the Marian Basilica of St Mary Major, a site he cherished. His funeral will witness the presence of global dignitaries.

Throughout his 12-year pontificate, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of welcoming and caring for migrants, often visiting significant locations like the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, a primary landing point for migrants from North Africa. His stance on migrant issues frequently conflicted with governmental policies, including those of the USA.
