Messina Strait Bridge Scheduled for 2032-33 Completion, Salvini Announces

Rome: Transport and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini announced Wednesday that the government’s ambitious project to construct a bridge across the Strait of Messina is set to be operational by 2032 or 2033. The project, which received approval from the Cipess economic planning committee, is expected to commence this autumn.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini, speaking at a press conference, stated, “If we keep going as we have started, the goal is to be able to cross the bridge between 2032 and 2033, which is what the engineers predict.” He emphasized the necessity of the Court of Auditors’ approval, expressing confidence in initiating construction, including site works and expropriations, by September or October.

Salvini also highlighted the government’s commitment to preventing mafia infiltration in the project. “Countering any attempt of infiltration will be our raison d’ªtre,” he asserted. The minister mentioned that protocols are being adopted in collaboration with the interior minister, similar to those implemented for Expo Milano 2015 and the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics.

He stressed the importance of monitoring the entire supply chain to ensure it remains free from malicious influences. Salvini remarked, “If you don’t build the bridge because the mafia and ‘ndrangheta exist, then we won’t do anything anymore,” underscoring the government’s determination to proceed despite potential challenges.
