Vatican City: Foodstuffs that could theoretically be used to get messages into the papal conclave, such as asparagus, ravioli, and whole chicken, are off the menu at Casa Santa Marta where the 133 cardinals, tasked with selecting the next pope, are residing during their daily sessions in the Sistine Chapel.
According to Ansa News Agency, the centuries-old culinary guidelines for the conclave dictate frugal meals and minimal wine consumption for the cardinals, whose average age is presently 72. Desserts are only provided on Sundays, should the conclave occur on that day.
Additionally, the cooks and serving staff are bound by the same oath of secrecy as the cardinal electors, under the threat of excommunication, ensuring the confidentiality of the proceedings.
