Meloni Urges Unified Action Against Femicides After Tragic Murder

Rome: We must all do more together on femicides, Premier Giorgia Meloni said Thursday amid a recent upsurge in a long spate marked by the murder of a 14-year-old girl near Naples by her 18-year-old ex-boyfriend.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni expressed her condolences on social media, stating, “My embrace goes to Martina’s family, full of pain and closeness,” in reference to the murder of Afragola teenager Martina Carbonaro. Emphasizing the role of justice, she remarked, “Justice has the task of intervening with the utmost severity,” and highlighted the responsibility of institutions to remain vigilant: “Institutions have the duty not to look the other way.”

Meloni underscored the need for a cultural and social shift, noting, “There are many measures that we have approved so far to try to stop this evil, but we must be aware that the rules will never be enough if we do not give life to a profound cultural and social change.” She acknowledged the progress made in recent years but stressed, “In recent years, steps forward have been made, but evidently it is not enough. We must do more, all together. For Martina. For everyone.” Meloni described the incident as “a merciless crime, which deeply affects every parent, every citizen, every human being.”
