Meloni Silent on Gaza, Sacrifices Italy Dignity – Schlein

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni remains silent on Gaza and sacrifices Italy’s dignity due to her friendship with United States President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, centre-left opposition Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein said Thursday, urging the premier to recognize Palestine while it still exists. “Meloni’s silence on what is happening in Gaza is shameful for Italy,” said Schlein.

According to Ansa News Agency, Schlein criticized the premier’s inaction amidst the ongoing situation in Gaza. “We cannot continue to sacrifice our country’s dignity on the altar of Meloni, (Forza Italia leader, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio) Tajani, and (League leader, Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo) Salvini’s friendship with Trump and Netanyahu,” she said.

Schlein further questioned Meloni’s stance, stating, “Faced with the criminal occupation of Gaza and Netanyahu’s ministers declaring the death of the prospect of a Palestinian state,” she said, “will Meloni still say that recognizing Palestine would be premature? What is she waiting for? Until there’s nothing left to recognize?”
