Meloni Criticizes Opposition for Fundamentalist Stance on Gaza

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni has reiterated her assertion that the centre-left opposition is displaying a more fundamentalist stance than Hamas regarding the situation in Gaza. Meloni argued that this was evident due to the opposition’s refusal to back a peace plan for the Gaza Strip, a plan that had garnered support from Hamas.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni also addressed recent remarks by CGIL trade union leader Maurizio Landini, who referred to her as “Trump’s courtesan.” Meloni criticized Landini for his choice of words, noting that he seemed unaware that the term implied prostitution. Landini, however, insisted that his use of the term was meant to suggest ‘lackey’ and not ‘sex worker.’

Meloni further clarified her earlier statement comparing the opposition to the Palestinian militants. “I heard something quite inaccurate, that I compared the opposition to terrorists,” she explained. “For those who know Italian, I didn’t accuse the opposition of being terrorists or worse than Hamas.”

She emphasized that her criticism was focused on the opposition’s refusal to support the Gaza peace plan in Parliament, a plan which Hamas later endorsed. “I said that your position was even more fundamentalist than Hamas’s,” she stated.

Meloni expressed her hope that the Left would comprehend the definition of ‘fundamentalist,’ describing it as someone who unwaveringly supports a doctrine without allowing for mediation or compromise. “Which is what you did,” she concluded.
