Meloni Challenges Democratic Party’s Stance on Trump and International Alliances

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday emphasized that rejecting an alliance with former U.S. President Donald Trump could call into question Italy’s membership in NATO and the G7. This statement was made in response to the center-left Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein during a debate in the Lower House, which took place ahead of the EU Council meeting this week.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni criticized Schlein for having an unclear vision of Europe. She questioned whether supporting the European Union translates to sending troops to Ukraine, as proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Premier Keir Starmer. These leaders have been advocating for a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached between Kyiv and Moscow. However, Meloni clarified that deploying Italian troops to such a force is not currently being considered.

Furthermore, Meloni questioned Schlein’s stance on Trump, asking whether deeming Trump an unsuitable ally implies Italy should exit NATO and the G7 and cease bilateral relations. Meloni argued that alliances should not be contingent on electoral outcomes. She acknowledged the importance of the opposition’s viewpoint, yet reiterated her commitment to standing with Italy, asserting that her allegiance does not waver between Europe and the United States but remains steadfastly with her nation.
