Meloni Chairs Strategic Meeting on Defence Investments

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday led a significant meeting at her office at Palazzo Chigi with key figures from Italy’s defence sector, as well as representatives from companies involved in defence investments. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies for enhancing defence investments in the country.

According to Ansa News Agency, the meeting was attended by Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani, and Fincantieri CEO Pierroberto Folgiero, among others. The discussions centered around leveraging the EU’s new SAFE facility loan facility and exploiting the escape clause that enables nations to invest in the defence sector without breaching the Stability and Growth Pact.

Premier Meloni emphasized the importance of directing investments towards areas that could yield benefits at the civilian level and ensuring compatibility with investments made by Italy’s European partners. This strategic approach aims to bolster Italy’s defence capabilities while aligning with broader European objectives.
