Meloni Asserts Government’s Commitment to Combating Migrant Trafficking

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni declared that her government is employing all available resources to tackle human trafficking, during an event commemorating the 160th anniversary of the Italian Coast Guard. She described migrant smuggling as an intolerable modern form of slavery and one of the world’s most profitable criminal activities.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni, who leads the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, emphasized that over 9,000 people perished on migration routes in 2024, underscoring the urgent need for government action. “When faced with these numbers, we have only one choice: resign ourselves, or act,” Meloni stated. She advocated for innovative solutions and increased determination and commitment to address the crisis.

The government has already made strides by reaching an agreement with Tirana to establish migrant centers in Albania, although legal challenges have delayed the project’s implementation. Meloni highlighted a significant decrease in migrant-boat landings and sea-related deaths, viewing these developments as evidence that the issue can be effectively managed. She argued for a new approach that transcends any unreasonable, self-serving ideological stance on migration.
