Meloni and Kristersson Call for Increased Defence Spending in Europe

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni and visiting Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed support for the removal of defence spending from the Stability Pact during their meeting at Palazzo Chigi. They emphasized the need for further initiatives to enhance the continent’s defence capabilities.

According to Ansa News Agency, the leaders issued a joint statement highlighting the importance of not only increasing expenditure but also focusing on strategic investments. They stated, “We must spend more but also implement investments,” underscoring the dual approach necessary for strengthening Europe’s defence infrastructure.

The decision by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to exclude defence spending from the Stability Pact was acknowledged as a positive initial step. Meloni and Kristersson agreed that this move should be followed by additional solutions to further bolster Europe’s defensive posture.
