Meloni Advocates for Sustainable Adjustments to ReArm Europe Plan

Rome: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that the government is striving to enhance the sustainability of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s ReArm Europe plan, which is currently heavily reliant on the national debt of member states. This statement was made during Meloni’s address to the Lower House following a debate on her communications ahead of the upcoming EU Council meeting.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni emphasized that the government’s stance is definitive, advocating for the exclusion of defense spending from the Stability Pact. She expressed concern over the Plan’s dependence on national debt, which has prompted the government to propose alternative solutions. Meloni highlighted the importance of encouraging private investments in this area, stating, “We are making other proposals because it helps us deduct expenses, while on the other hand a priority must be to favor private investments on this issue.”

In collaboration with Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, Meloni has developed a proposal inspired by the Invest EU initiative, which includes European guarantees for private investments. This approach aims to enhance the plan’s sustainability. Meloni reiterated the clarity of the government’s position on this matter, underscoring their commitment to making the ReArm Europe plan more sustainable.
