Meloni Advocates for Increased Defense Spending in Italy and EU

Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni addressed the Senate during question time, emphasizing her patriotism and advocating for increased defense spending by Italy and the European Union.

According to Ansa News Agency, Meloni announced that Rome would elevate its defense spending to 2% of GDP this year, aligning with NATO’s requirements. She emphasized that the Atlantic Alliance should focus more on its southern flank. Meloni asserted that Italy now possesses a defined foreign policy and dismissed concerns that the nation would be isolated under a center-right government.

Meloni highlighted the necessity of maintaining unity between the EU and the US and expressed her readiness to inform parliament about the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. Regarding the situation in Ukraine, she reaffirmed Italy’s support for Kyiv and urged Moscow to demonstrate its desire for peace. She concluded by stating that ensuring security is not merely a favor to the US but is beneficial for Italy itself.
