MED9 summit in Cyprus to discuss situation in the Middle East, says President

We are monitoring the developments in our region in cooperation not only with the European Union and the United States, but also with the neighboring states with which we are in constant contact, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said on Friday, in Nicosia.

The President made statements before attending a conference, at the University of Cyprus, about the 50 years that passed since the 1974 Turkish invasion in Cyprus. He recalled that Cyprus will host the MED9 summit of heads of states next week and Middle East issue will dominate the agenda.

The President noted that the leaders will discuss how the EU could take some initiatives to avoid further escalation of the situation. He also said that putting an ending to ongoing developments is the primary goal, in order to allow time for a diplomatic way out “ending all of what we are seeing each day.”

The MED9 group includes EU member states Cyprus, Greece, France, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Spain and Portugal. It was announced that ?he King of Jorda
n, Abdullah II, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are also attending the MED9 leaders’ Summit next week.
