Mattarella Warns Against Nuclear Weapons Amid Global Tensions

Rome: President Sergio Mattarella on Wednesday released a message to mark the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The head of State referred to the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as an “apocalyptic event”.

According to Ansa News Agency, Mattarella emphasized that the tragic events and the sufferings endured by the survivors serve as a warning for humanity that must not be forgotten. He stressed the importance of remembering these events, especially in today’s world, which is marked by wars, growing tensions, and confrontations.

Mattarella stated that using or even threatening to use nuclear weapons in conflicts is a crime against humanity. He highlighted the importance of the global architecture of disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, which are key components of the multilateral system established after World War II. He warned against abandoning these efforts, as doing so could accelerate a climate of confrontation.
