Rome: Jailed mafia bosses in Italy may now be allowed to meet with women they have formed relationships with through correspondence from prison, as ruled by the Supreme Court of Cassation on Tuesday. This decision comes after the court dismissed an appeal from the justice ministry, which sought to overturn a surveillance court’s approval allowing Cosa Nostra boss Davide Emanuello to meet with a woman he had been corresponding with.

According to Ansa News Agency, the meeting between Emanuello and his correspondent, which was set to take place at Sassari Prison, had initially been blocked by the prison warden. Emanuello subsequently appealed this decision to the surveillance court, which ruled in his favor. The case highlights the strict conditions under the 41 bis prison regime, where mafia bosses are subjected to isolation and restricted visitations.
