Macron Reminds Netanyahu: Israel’s Creation Linked to UN Decision

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should remember that Israel was established based on a UN decision. This statement was made during a closed-door meeting at the Elysee Palace, where Macron discussed historical UN resolutions and the current geopolitical tensions involving Israel.

According to Anadolu Agency, Macron referenced the UN General Assembly resolution from November 1947, which proposed the partition of Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. This historical context was brought up amid ongoing discussions about military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, for which Macron has previously urged a halt in arms exports to Israel.

The French President pointed out the importance of acknowledging past UN decisions, especially during times of conflict. His remarks come at a time when Israel continues its military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, despite widespread international calls for a ceasefire. France has also voiced its condemnation aga
inst Israeli actions that affected UN peacekeepers stationed in southern Lebanon.

In a rebuttal to Macron’s comments, Netanyahu’s office issued a statement asserting that Israel’s formation was not merely a result of UN decisions but was achieved through the “War of Independence.” The statement, published on the social media platform X, argued that Israel’s establishment came after significant sacrifices by its people, including Holocaust survivors. Furthermore, Netanyahu’s office criticized the UN for what it described as numerous antisemitic decisions over the decades, aimed at undermining Israel’s legitimacy and security.
