Liliana Segre Expresses Concern Over Trump-Zelensky Showdown

Milan: Holocaust survivor and Life Senator Liliana Segre on Monday voiced her concerns following a confrontation between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Friday. Segre, reflecting on her experiences as a victim of hatred, emphasized her hope that the United States remains stable.

According to Ansa News Agency, Segre expressed her apprehensions after Trump, alongside Vice President JD Vance, accused Zelensky of obstructing a peace agreement with Russia. Speaking at a meeting with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi at the Holocaust memorial in Milan, Segre described her reaction to the Oval Office altercation. She noted a “reversal” in roles, describing how the “invaded became the invader,” a shift she attributes to Trump’s re-election.

Segre, aged 94, also conveyed her “deep gratitude” for the American forces who liberated her from a concentration camp and provided medical care at field hospitals. These facilities treated all individuals with “fraternal generosity,” she recalled.

Born in 1930 to a Jewish family in Milan, Segre faced expulsion from school in 1938 due to the Italian Racial Laws. In 1943, she was deported to Auschwitz with her family. She was the sole survivor among her relatives, returning to Milan after World War II concluded in 1945.

After remaining silent for decades, Segre began sharing her experiences publicly in the 1990s, particularly addressing young students. In 2019, she was given a security detail following online threats and insults directed at her.
