League Proposes Venice Burqa Ban

Venice: The right-wing League party has proposed banning the burqa in Venice, local dailies reported Thursday. The motion, filed by council whip Alex Bazzaro, suggests implementing a DASPO city ban for individuals wearing the Islamic veil in public spaces.

According to Ansa News Agency, Bazzaro urged the city’s mayor to adopt a definitive stance on the issue, arguing that the burqa and niqab contravene women’s rights. He stated, “We ask the mayor to take a position as a political act: the burqa or niqab is a violation of women’s rights. I do not know of any other religious confessions that require hiding one’s face.” Venice’s mayor, Luigi Brugnaro, is known for his conservative views.
