Budapest: János Lázár, Construction and Transportation Minister, has announced that the upgrade of the Budapest-Belgrade rail line is set to be completed by September 30, 2025. This announcement was made during a meeting of parliament’s economy committee, highlighting the government’s focus on improving railway infrastructure.
According to About Hungary, the USD 2.2 billion project aims to reduce travel time between the two capitals to three hours and ten minutes. In addition to the Budapest-Belgrade rail line, Lázár detailed plans for the renovation of 14 key rail lines, covering approximately 500 kilometers. These projects are expected to be financed through a 30-year loan from the European Investment Bank, with a decision anticipated in April.
Furthermore, Lázár mentioned that nearly HUF 1,700 billion has been allocated for fleet upgrades. However, the procurement of new locomotives is unlikely before 2026 due to delivery delays, although used or refurbished vehicles are being considered as alternatives.
Moreover, Lázár indicated that approximately HUF 1,500 billion in support from the European Commission could primarily be utilized for upgrading the five HEV rapid suburban rail lines in Budapest and its surroundings. Tenders for acquiring HEV rolling stock are projected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2024 or the first quarter of 2025.
