Lawyers Report 180 Detained in Istanbul During May Day Protests

Istanbul: Lawyers from the Turkish association Chd reported that at least 180 individuals were detained by security forces in Istanbul for attempting to reach the central Taksim Square during May Day celebrations. The area was off-limits for mass demonstrations and was heavily barricaded by security personnel.

According to Ansa News Agency, the city centre was fortified, with all main streets leading to Taksim Square blocked by police since the early hours. Additionally, underground and tram services approaching or passing through the central Beyoglu district were suspended.

These measures were part of the authorities’ efforts to prevent large gatherings in the city centre, reflecting the heightened security concerns surrounding the annual May Day protests.
