Juventus Exits Champions League Playoffs in Extra Time Defeat

Rome: Juventus has been eliminated from the Champions League at the playoffs stage, following a 3-1 defeat after extra time to PSV Eindhoven, resulting in a 4-3 aggregate loss. This marks a disappointing exit for the Italian club, coming on the heels of similar playoff exits by AC Milan and Atalanta.

According to Ansa News Agency, Juventus entered the match holding a 2-1 advantage from the first leg. However, the Dutch champions dominated the play early on. Ivan Perisic, the veteran Croatian winger, scored for PSV in the 53rd minute, bringing the hosts level on aggregate. Juventus briefly regained their aggregate lead when Timothy Weah scored shortly thereafter.

The match took another turn when PSV’s Moroccan midfielder, Ismael Saibari, scored from close range, leveling the aggregate score once again. The decisive moment came during the first period of extra time when PSV defender Ryan Flamingo found the back of the net, securing the Dutch team’s passage to the next stage.

The playoff exits of Juventus, AC Milan, and Atalanta leave Inter as Italy’s sole representative in the last 16 of the competition. Inter had qualified directly through the league stage. These results could affect Italy’s chances of maintaining their extra place in future Champions League seasons, following their top finish in the UEFA coefficients last term.
