Jordan Calls for Sanctions Against Israel to Deter Aggression

ANKARA: Deterrent measures need to be taken if Israel is disregarding the global community and undermining international legitimacy, Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said on Tuesday.

According to Anadolu Agency, addressing a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan in Ankara, Safadi emphasized the necessity of imposing sanctions on Israel and halting weapon supplies to the nation in response to its continued air and ground attacks into Lebanon and strikes in Gaza. He highlighted the severe humanitarian and infrastructural destruction in Gaza, describing the region as “uninhabitable” due to Israel’s actions.

Safadi accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war, which he categorized as a war crime. He detailed the extensive damage caused by Israel, including the destruction of schools, hospitals, mosques, and churches, as well as the entire infrastructure of Gaza.

The Foreign Minister also pointed to the ongoing conflict in the West Bank, where he stated Israel is waging a
nother war through killings, targeting, settlement, and destruction. Safadi criticized the Security Council for not fulfilling its role in maintaining global peace and security.

Highlighting the significance of Jerusalem’s holy sites, Safadi warned of the severe consequences if the situation in Jerusalem and the West Bank escalates further. He mentioned the dire situation in northern Gaza, where he claimed no humanitarian aid has been able to enter since September 30.

Safadi argued that Israel’s security could only be genuinely assured if Palestinians are permitted to ensure their own security. While acknowledging Israel’s military gains, he asserted that Israel has lost on strategic, legal, and political fronts.

He condemned the Israeli government for obstructing peace efforts and not adhering to international agreements, especially in the context of the widely supported two-state solution. Safadi reiterated Jordan’s commitment to coordinating with Turkey to address these issues, particularly through the
Gaza Contact Group.

The Jordanian Foreign Minister concluded by expressing Jordan’s determination to protect Jerusalem and its holy sites, warning against any attempts to displace Palestinians to Egypt, and reaffirmed Jordan’s stance against such actions.
