Japan Prepares for Snap Election with Record Number of Female Candidates

TOKYO: Japan is set to hold a snap general election on Sunday to choose representatives for the House of Representatives, the 465-seat lower house of the National Diet. Over 105 million eligible voters will have the opportunity to cast their votes at more than 45,000 polling stations across the country.

According to Anadolu Agency, more than 1,300 candidates, including a record 314 women, are vying for seats in this election. Voters will cast two ballots: one for a candidate in a single-seat constituency and another for a party in proportional representation. The election encompasses 289 single-seat districts and 11 proportional representation blocs. A party or coalition must secure 233 seats to achieve a simple majority and form a government.

In the previous parliamentary setup, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held 256 seats, while its coalition partner, the Komeito party, had 32 seats. The LDP, which has predominantly governed Japan since 1955, is expected to encounter significant competition fr
om the main opposition, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDPJ). The CDPJ, which held 98 seats in the dissolved parliament, is projected to potentially increase its share to as many as 140 seats, making a coalition with Komeito crucial for the LDP’s continued governance.

The Japan Innovation Party and the Japanese Communist Party, which previously held 44 and 10 seats respectively, are also part of the political landscape as the nation heads to the polls.
