Italy’s Self-Reliance in Merchant Ship Protection Highlighted by Foreign Minister

Rome: Italy protects its merchant ships by itself, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stated following remarks by U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who expressed frustration over U.S. involvement in strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen targeting Western shipping in the Red Sea.

According to Ansa News Agency, Tajani, who also serves as deputy premier, emphasized Italy’s independent defense capabilities, highlighting the Italian Navy’s role in intercepting drones launched by the Houthis. “Given that I don’t like the word ‘hate’, it’s not my language, I want to remind everyone that we protect our merchant ships ourselves,” he remarked, countering Vance’s comments.

Tajani further elaborated on Italy’s collaboration with international forces, including those from the U.S. and the UK, stating, “Maybe Vance has just arrived, maybe he doesn’t know the background, but we are integrated into a series of operations.” He underscored the reciprocal nature of protection within these alliances, asserting, “The Italian Navy is there, we protect our merchant ships ourselves, others don’t protect them, and we protect others as others protect us.”

In conclusion, Tajani sought to clarify Italy’s position with respect to international cooperation and mutual defense, stating, “This is to dot the i’s, with great respect and without hating anyone.”
