Italy’s Organ Transplants Reach Record-Breaking Numbers in 2024

Rome: Italy’s organ transplants reached a historic high of 4,692 in 2024, as reported by the health ministry on Monday. This marked a significant milestone in the country’s medical achievements, showcasing an increase in organ donations and successful transplant surgeries.

According to Ansa News Agency, organ donations rose to 2,110, reflecting a 2.7% increase compared to 2023. Transplants saw an additional 226 procedures from the previous year, culminating in the highest figures ever recorded in the nation. Kidney transplants accounted for about half of the total, numbering 2,393, which is a 6.6% rise from 2023. Heart transplants also saw substantial growth with 418 surgeries, marking a 13% increase.

Liver transplants experienced a modest rise in 2024, reaching 1,732, which is a 1.8% increase. However, lung transplants saw a decrease from 188 to 174, while pancreas transplants remained unchanged at 36 procedures.

The regions leading in organ donations included Tuscany, with 49.4 donors per million residents, followed by Emilia-Romagna with 45.5 donors, and Veneto with 44.7 donors.
