Italy’s Household Trends Reveal Increase in Single-Person Homes

Rome: Families in Italy are getting smaller and, in the 2023-2024 period, over 36% of households were made up of single people, Istat said in its annual report on Wednesday. The national statistics agency highlighted a notable shift in the composition of Italian households, reflecting changing societal dynamics.

According to Ansa News Agency, only 28.2% of households consisted of couples with children. The report attributed this trend to factors such as marital instability, a low fertility rate, and the postponement of parenthood. These elements have contributed significantly to the evolving structure of Italian families.

The rise in the proportion of single households affects all age groups, with a particularly pronounced increase among the elderly. The report revealed that almost 40% of people aged 75 and over live alone, with a majority being women.

Istat also noted that blended families, unmarried couples, not-widowed single parents, and not-widowed single individuals now make up 41.1% of households, indicating a diversification in household types across the nation.
