Italy’s Defense Minister Declares Inability to Safeguard Flotilla Outside International Waters

Rome: Defence Minister Guido Crosetto announced on Thursday that Italy cannot ensure the protection of the Global Sumud Flotilla if it ventures into Israel’s territorial waters. This statement was made during his report to the Lower House following an attack on the flotilla that occurred between Tuesday night and Wednesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, Crosetto reiterated Premier Giorgia Meloni’s viewpoint that attempting to breach the Israeli blockade to deliver aid to Gaza was an irresponsible act. He emphasized Italy’s commitment to preventing incidents involving the flotilla and urged for political unity on this front. In response to this week’s attack, Crosetto dispatched an Italian Navy frigate to monitor the area where the flotilla is currently navigating.

Crosetto expressed concerns over the security of the flotilla, highlighting that Italy cannot guarantee its safety outside international waters. He suggested that the flotilla, which includes several Italian boats and citizens, such as MPs and ME
Ps, should consider the Catholic Church’s proposal. This proposal involves transporting the aid to Cyprus, where the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem could facilitate its delivery to Gaza.

He questioned the necessity of risking Italian citizens’ safety to provide aid to Gaza. Crosetto stated that the government has significantly supported the people in the Gaza Strip and is capable of delivering aid swiftly. He concluded by pondering the extent to which the flotilla should proceed in its mission.
