Italy-Saudi Arabia Strategic Partnership Strengthens with pound 10 Billion Agreements
Rome: Premier Giorgia Meloni announced on Monday that Italy and Saudi Arabia are focused on enhancing their strategic ties across multiple sectors.
According to Ansa News Agency, Italy has finalized cooperation and industrial agreements amounting to approximately 10 billion euros with Saudi Arabia. This move is part of an intensified strategic partnership between the two nations, as highlighted by Meloni following her meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Al’Ula.
During her visit, Meloni described Saudi Arabia as a pivotal player in the Middle East. She emphasized the importance of normalizing relations and pursuing a two-state solution, particularly noting how improved ties between Saudi Arabia and Israel could advance this process. She also pointed out Saudi Arabia’s significant influence in Lebanon, particularly in fortifying Lebanese institutions and aiding in the presidential election process, as well as its commitment to stabilization efforts in Syria.
Meloni underscored Saudi Arabia’s crucial role in stabilizing regions across the Middle East and Africa, and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts with the nation. She expressed support for expanding the GCAP combat aircraft agreement with the UK and Japan to include Saudi Arabia, although she acknowledged that such an expansion would require time.
Addressing the issue of tariffs, Meloni advocated for dialogue, suggesting that a confrontational approach would be counterproductive. She expressed her intent to collaborate with the US administration to find balanced solutions, acknowledging the longstanding trade surplus issue between Europe and the United States. Meloni highlighted that while Europe holds a significant trade surplus in goods, the United States benefits from a substantial surplus in trade services, demonstrating the interdependent nature of their economies.
On Sunday, Meloni participated in a high-level round table in Al’Ula, celebrating the strengthened relations between Italy and Saudi Arabia. She emphasized the ample room for growth in economic and financial cooperation between the two countries, marking this period as an opportunity to elevate their partnership to a strategic level. The agreements signed, worth a total of 10 billion dollars, are seen as foundational platforms to explore further opportunities together.
