Italy Prepares for Namibia Showdown with Revamped Lineup

Windhoek: The lineup that Italy coach Gonzalo Quesada has decided to field next Friday against Namibia in Windhoek, in the first of three matches that make up the program of the 2025 summer tour in southern Africa, is ready. The back and wing triangle will be formed by Trulla, Gesi, and Paolo Odogwu, who returns to the national team after his last appearance at the 2023 World Cup. The centers will be Menoncello and Marin, while the keys to the midfield will be entrusted to Da Re and Fusco. The back row will consist of Vintcent, Zuliani, and Negri, while the second row will feature Niccol² Cannone and Favretto. In the front row, together with Nicotera-his first time as captain-there will be Riccioni and Fischetti.

According to Ansa News Agency, coach Quesada explained the team’s preparation efforts, stating that the main challenge was quickly finding rhythm and coordination among the players. The coaching staff decided to rest many starters to allow them recovery time after two intense seasons. Quesada noted that some players have not played for five weeks, others for more than 15, and some are experiencing their first call-up. Despite these challenges, the coach highlighted the group’s energy as a positive aspect.

Quesada emphasized the importance of each opponent on this tour and maintained that their approach remains consistent: advancing in attack, showcasing their true defensive identity, and providing opportunities for players to compete at this level. On the bench, Quesada has placed three rookies-Di Bartolomeo, Hasa, and Belloni, MVP of the last Serie A Elite-alongside Spagnolo, Zambonin, Lorenzo Cannone, Varney, and Bertaccini.

Friday’s match will mark the sixth encounter against Namibia, and the fourth in Windhoek. Previous matches played in Africa were won by the hosts. The last meeting was at the 2023 World Cup, where Italy triumphed with a 52-8 victory. Following the Namibia match, Italy will face South Africa twice, on July 5 in Pretoria and on July 12 in Port Elizabeth.
