Rome: Italy is on heightened security alert following the United States’ strikes on Iranian nuclear targets over the weekend. The Italian government has implemented increased surveillance measures for locations associated with the US and around the Vatican, especially during the ongoing Jubilee celebrations. Additionally, protection measures have been enhanced at US military bases situated in Italy.
According to Ansa News Agency, Premier Giorgia Meloni conducted a conference call on Sunday to evaluate the situation with key government officials, including Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, and Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti.
Meloni is maintaining communication with international leaders, having spoken with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Sunday. She also had a telephone conversation with Democratic Party (PD) Secretary Elly Schlein, the leader of Italy’s largest opposition group, who urged the government to keep Italy out of the conflict. Furthermore, Meloni consulted with President Sergio Mattarella.
The Premier is scheduled to report to parliament on Monday ahead of the NATO summit on Tuesday and the EU Council meeting on Thursday.
