Italy Leads EU in Proportion of Doctors Aged Over 65

Rome: Italy has the highest proportion of doctors over 65 in the European Union, Eurostat reported based on 2022 figures. With 26.7% of its medical practitioners aged 65 or older, Italy tops the list followed by Hungary and Estonia, with 22.4% and 22.3% respectively.

According to Ansa News Agency, the trend of an aging medical workforce is also evident in Germany, which has the highest share of doctors aged between 55 and 64, totaling 36.1%. Bulgaria and Latvia follow Germany in this category, with 33.9% and 27.4% respectively of their doctors in the same age bracket.

Conversely, Malta boasts the highest percentage of young doctors, with 46.1% of its medical professionals being in the younger age category. Romania and the Netherlands follow Malta, with 34.6% and 29.7% respectively of their doctors being younger.
