Brussels: The European Commission has initiated an infringement procedure against Italy concerning the extensive use of temporary contracts for teachers in Italian State schools.
According to Ansa News Agency, the Commission highlighted that Italian law does not provide fixed-term schoolteachers with the right to gradual salary progression based on past service, a benefit afforded to permanent teachers. This discrepancy, the Commission argues, violates the EU’s principle of non-discrimination for fixed-term workers, thus infringing on EU law.
The Commission has issued a formal notice to Italy, demanding a response within two months to rectify the identified issues. Should Italy fail to deliver a satisfactory answer, the Commission may proceed with a reasoned opinion, potentially escalating the legal action.
