Italy Faces Crisis with 3,500 Femicide Orphans, Says National Observatory

Rome: Around 3,500 minors in Italy have become orphans due to the prevalent femicides plaguing the nation, as revealed by the president of an organization dedicated to monitoring this troubling phenomenon. On Thursday, Stefania Bartoccetti, head of the Independent National Observatory on Femicide Orphans, shared these findings with the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Femicide.

According to Ansa News Agency, Bartoccetti emphasized that until recently, these “special orphans” were not accounted for in any statistical manner. There was an absence of a dedicated register or consistent data collection methods to track the number of children affected by such tragic events. Through the analysis of journalistic reports on women who have been victims of homicide, the observatory managed to compile data and identify over 3,500 minors who have lost their mothers to femicide in Italy.

The nation is currently reeling from another shocking incident, where a 14-year-old girl was brutally murdered with a rock in Afragola, a town in the province of Naples. The victim’s 18-year-old ex-boyfriend has confessed to the crime, stating that he killed her because she refused to reconcile with him after their breakup. This recent tragedy has increased the number of femicides committed in Italy this year to 16.
