Italy Considers Revising Driving Licence Rules for Elderly After Fatal Accidents

Rome: Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced Friday that the Italian government is considering revising the rules for renewing driving licences for elderly drivers. This follows several fatal accidents, including two incidents where drivers over the age of 80 were driving in the wrong direction on motorways.

According to Ansa News Agency, Salvini discussed the potential changes during an interview with Rtl 102.5 radio. He emphasized the need for a thorough examination based on data and numbers to address the issue effectively. Salvini stated, “We’re thinking about how to possibly revise the driving license renewal exams after certain age limits, because of what’s been happening in recent weeks.”

Salvini highlighted that while the highway code has been reformed, preventing dangerous actions such as making U-turns or driving the wrong way on a motorway cannot be solely enforced through legislation. He stressed the importance of driver vigilance, noting, “You always have to be on the ball when you drive, otherwise you’ll cause disasters.”
