Italy Among Countries to Apply for SAFE Defense Loans

Brussels: Italy is among 18 EU member states that have submitted applications for the new SAFE facility loan program, aimed at bolstering key defense areas such as air missile defense, drones, and strategic enablers. This announcement was made by the European Commission on Wednesday.

According to Ansa News Agency, the other nations seeking access to this defense funding include Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, and Finland. These countries have collectively requested approximately 127 billion euros from the 150 billion euros available through the EU executive’s funding initiative.

The SAFE facility is designed to support EU member states in strengthening their defense capabilities by providing financial resources for critical defense projects. The interest in the program highlights the commitment of these countries to enhance their defense readiness in response to evolving security challenges.
