Italian Sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro Dies at 98

Milan: Italian sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro passed away on Sunday, a day before his 99th birthday, at his home in Milan. His foundation announced the news on Monday, marking the end of a significant era in contemporary sculpture.

According to Ansa News Agency, Pomodoro is celebrated for his bronze sphere sculptures, which are displayed in prominent locations worldwide. Carlotta Montebello, director of the artist’s foundation, emphasized the loss to the art community, describing Pomodoro as one of the most influential and visionary figures in the field. She noted that he leaves behind an extensive legacy.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Premier Giorgia Meloni both paid tribute to Pomodoro. President Mattarella acknowledged the artist’s impact, noting that his works have been showcased in major museums globally and have left a permanent imprint on contemporary sculpture. He extended condolences on behalf of the Republic to Pomodoro’s family and students.

Premier Meloni expressed deep sorrow over Pomodoro’s passing, referring to him as a master of sculpture who embodied the essence of Italy in his art. She highlighted how his works brought recognition to Italian artistry on an international stage.

Pomodoro’s renowned Sphere Within Sphere series, known for their durable metal exteriors and intricate, almost mechanical interiors, have been displayed in prestigious venues such as the Vatican Museums, the United Nations building in New York, and the foreign ministry in Rome. His work remains a testament to his philosophy that “Art is a labyrinth.”
