Italian Police Officers Receive Life Sentences for 1987 Death of Colleague

Ravenna: Two Italian police officers received life sentences on Tuesday for their involvement in the 1987 death of a 21-year-old Carabinieri colleague, Pier Paolo Minguzzi, near Ravenna.

According to Ansa News Agency, the sentences were handed down for the crime of kidnapping for extortion, which resulted in the death of Minguzzi, a native of Alfonsine in the Ravenna area. Minguzzi, who was a conscript Carabiniere, was discovered deceased in the Po di Volano River, bound to a heavy grate, on May 1, 1987, ten days after he was kidnapped.

The Bologna Court of Assizes of Appeal delivered the ruling, overturning the initial verdict for former Carabinieri officers from the Alfonsine station, Orazio Tasca and Angelo Del Dotto, who had previously been acquitted in Ravenna. The court, however, upheld the acquittal of the third defendant, plumber Alfredo Tarroni.
