Cairo: An Italian man’s 25-year prison sentence for international drug trafficking was upheld on appeal by an Egyptian court on Wednesday, local media reported. Giacomo Passeri, a 32-year-old from Pescara, was arrested in Egypt in August 2023 while on holiday.
According to Ansa News Agency, Passeri, who had been residing in London for some time, was in possession of small doses of drugs. His family’s version of events suggests that the drugs found were for personal use rather than for trafficking purposes. Despite this claim, the court maintained its ruling, leading to significant concern and distress among Passeri’s relatives and supporters.
The case has drawn considerable attention in both Italy and Egypt, highlighting ongoing concerns about drug-related offenses and the legal challenges faced by foreign nationals abroad. Passeri’s legal team is expected to explore further options, including potential diplomatic interventions, in an effort to reduce the severity of the sentence.
